Hello friend!
If you’ve been a part of my virtual farm tribe for any length of time, you know how excited I get when new baby animals come to the farm. The number of exclamation points and little heart emojis per email take a sharp upward trend for sure!! 😍
But, yes, the first fall piglets arrived yesterday morning!!
It was some drama, let me tell you!
This mama was a first time mom, which generally mean they are freaking out and can’t figure why strange things are happening to their bodies. There was a lot of walking around and not a lot of feeding her babies going on…. 🤨 They also sometimes step on their babies, injuring them to varying degrees. One didn’t make it last night due to this. 😫 Not surprising when babies are only a couple pounds each and mom is at least 300 lbs.
According to the recommendation of decades of experienced pig farmers, a tried and true method of relaxing stressed moms is some sort of alcoholic beverage. I had some “supplies” on hand for this little lady….and it worked pretty well!
(Yes, not even kidding! 😂😂)
But luckily today, she seems to be getting the hang of it and I’ve seen her twice lying down and quietly feeding/snuggling them. Go new mom! 6 little ones are up and moving and healthy so far!
If you can handle the fact that your bacon was once cute, here’s a melt-your-heart video. 🥰
From all of us here at Piggery Run Farm,
with 2 feet or 4 feet,
we wish you a beautiful fall day! 😘
