Piggery Run Farm

100% Berkshire pork

Did you know this about outdoor raised pigs?

by | Jul 2, 2024

Hello!

Look at this interesting fact about nutrition I read this week:

Lard is one of the richest dietary sources of vitamin D, boasting upwards of 500 IU per teaspoon. BUT, only if the pigs are exposed to sunlight. Just like humans, pigs manufacture vitamin D from UVB rays from the sun. (Shared by Lily Nichols, nutritionist)

I thought this was so interesting!  Especially since our pigs have access to the outdoors 24/7. 🌞Vitamin D helps build strong bones and also helps combat depression (especially in the winter months when the sun is less visible in the snowy Midwest.) Yet another reason to eat outdoor raised pork – yum!

I’m guessing this research also pertains to ANY outdoor raised animals….cattle, chickens, etc.

Plus it’s just so much more fun to see animals outside enjoying nature, especially once who might be conventionally grown in buildings where they never see the light of day.

Here’s an oldie, but goodie video of some of our pigs (back when we had other breeds than just Berkshire.)

Enjoy!

We are Lindsey and Naomi Johnson, along with our 6 farm kids. We are a small family farm in Gibbon, Minnesota. We spend our days experiencing God's love, growing our own food, and encouraging and teaching others to do the same. We raise our hogs with plenty of mud and sunshine and feed them an alternative diet of barley and field peas, along with summer barnyard forage and grass hay bedding 24/7/365. This means healthy and happy pigs, delicious pork, corn/soy/GMO/vaccine free! We also farrow to finish, which means our hogs are born here and live here their entire lives in a laid-back, stress-free pig paradise.
