This week we let the little broilers out of the trailer to forage in a weedy fenced in patch. They were delighted at the change of diet and scenery!
Looking to get out of the city for an afternoon? According to their Facebook page, the local Gibbon Sunflower Field will be opening THIS FRIDAY August 29th! Come visit the field and visit our farm just a couple miles away! We have meat sticks and many pork cuts to choose from. Here’s the address to the field. The field will be open until September 14th, from sunrise to sunset everyday.
What’s in the farm kitchen this week
The other day, Julie was inspired by a lonely cucumber in the fridge and made these little tuna/cucumber bites.
Basically, mix together tuna, mayo, salt, and chopped onion and celery. Spread on sliced cucumbers and enjoy.
These were fantastic! A perfect fresh garden burst with yummy seasoned tuna salad.
Bible inspiration this week
The other day, I rescued a caterpillar from a little boy’s pocket.
Yikes.
Kind of makes me think of this verse: (haha)
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.Psalm 40:2
When I set the caterpillar on the ground, he only stayed rolled up for a few seconds before he happily crawled away. Rocks and grass and dirt were a happy trade for a tight, hot space with not much for fresh air.
We are reminded all the time by health professionals about how many health benefits there are connected with going outside and getting some fresh air…how, when all 5 senses are touched with lovely outside things, that stress and anxiety can seem less overwhelming.
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.”
Matthew 6:28-29
This verse comes to me regularly…when I’m worried about details for a lot of things, I need to remember that I’m just one person…God is managing everything and SO much better than anything I can do. Look at how beautiful the flowers and so many other details in nature. If the Lord takes care of them, why wouldn’t he take care of us too?
Something related to that, and also always on my mind, the fine line of worrying vs working…here the flowers are commended for not “laboring or spinning” and yet another verse says “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). What’s the difference between faithful work and worrying?
Still trying to figure that one out.
Encouraging you this week to find time to get outside and enjoy this lovely cooler weather…and to let God do the worrying for awhile.
