This week our baby broiler chicks arrived on the farm. It’s hard to believe that the little yellow fuzzballs will mean fresh chicken in about 2 months!
Usually about the time the chicks arrive, I start to analyze the freezer situation and make sure we’ll have room, or make sure all last year’s chicken is gone or make plans to finish it up in the next 2 months.
I found we had a number of legs/thighs/wings left, so we had a family chicken fry the other day. I even fixed up the firepit to grill the chicken over a wood fire – so so good!!
(Plus a fire means smores for dessert.)
It’s nice to prioritize family gatherings in these months where we can eat outside. ❤️
(We ate in enough time to beat the rain…see a dark clouds there? Ah summer!)
What’s in the farm kitchen this week
Look who likes to make cookies!
These amazing lemon cookies have been made several times in our house recently. Here are Julie and Marilla, just adding a glaze to the top of them.
The recipe is from Sugar Spun Run, a favorite baking blog at our house. It’s supposed to have poppy seeds in them as well, but someone keeps forgetting to get the poppy seeds…. oops.
The recipe also calls for lemon zest and because 2 lemons mysteriously appeared in our fridge (all the food shoppers in the house have no recollection buying them….??) she put zest in them as well, which proved to be a fabulous addition!
Bible inspiration this week
Two days this week had thunderstorms at around bedtime.
Sometimes this means that you are JUST dozing off and then crash/flash and back awake you are! (Or small children too…….)
This passage from the Psalms makes me think of interrupting thunderstorms…or perhaps other stressors of life also keeping us awake at night.
I am at rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will never be shaken.
Psalm 62:1-2
How right it is that we are at rest in God alone!
And how comforting it is that no matter what comes our way, God is our ROCK…our SALVATION….a STRONGHOLD that never moves and we are never shaken.
What a comfort when it seems like so many other things in life are not very rock-like or seem pretty shaky.
Encouraging you this week to remember to take all your worries to him and let him hold onto them while you rest in Him.
