I want to tell you of a funny way God gave us what we needed and we didn’t even really know what it was.
When we harvest our chickens, it’s been a challenge to find enough fridge space for at least 50 birds to cool.
(And if there isn’t enough space and they get packed together too tightly and don’t cool fast enough……we won’t talk about how that happened on accident one year….)
Last year my sister and I had a conversation…deep freezers are much larger than fridges…if we could keep a freezer at fridge temperature, we’d have much more space to spread out meat.
(Fresh meat should sit at fridge temp for 24-48 hours to let the meat “relax” before freezing. The meat is FAR more tender when it comes time to cooking/eating.)
We discussed with our husbands about creating some sort of regulator but there wasn’t anything really great to set up without re-wiring a freezer.
At one point, our family visited some friends and we were talking about this dilemma.
The eyes of the one guy lights up and he said “hey I have the answer for you!” He went in a cupboard and found this handy device where we plug the freezer cord into it and put a thermometer wire into the freezer and automatically turns on and off the freezer to keep the internal temp between 33 and 40.
They had purchased it on accident and wondered when in the world they’d ever use it.
Here’s the answer to the prayers of both families!
What’s in the farm kitchen this week
This past weekend we put 18 of our broiler chickens into the freezer.
(We still have 83 or so to go….but we won’t think about that now…)
And I also managed to get all the extra bones/carcasses cooked and shredded into one of our family’s favorite meals – chicken salad sandwiches!
I should really take a better photo…this doesn’t do it justice.
Super easy to make – take shredded chicken and add mayo/chopped onions/chopped celery/salt/pepper and fabulous meal!
Bible inspiration this week
The book of Psalms is filled with wonderful verses.
The eyes of all look eagerly to you, and you give them their food at the proper time.He opens his hand, and he satisfies the desire of every living thing.
Psalm 145:15-16
This verse sometimes gets used as a before meals prayer.
What a beautiful reminder of who truly puts that food on the table!
I’m guessing at some point you have wondered how ends might be met either for you or a close friend or family member.
The Lord of the universe who gives food to birds and animals will certainly take care of us and feed us.
Encouraging you this week to stay close to the one who can give you what you need when you need it.
